Huxley The Devils Disciple

Huxley's life spanned the enormous social transformation, much of which he helped to initiate, from the Victorian age to the twentieth century. Although brought up in poverty, the flamboyant, strong-willed Huxley fought his way to the heart of the intellectual establishment. Often referred to as 'Darwin's Bulldog', he became the major champion of the theory of evolution, and of agnosticism (he coined the word) and was crucial to the making of our modern Darwinian world.
