William Morris's dictum Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful found brilliant expression in the fireplaces of early-twentieth-century American bungalows. Providing heat, ambience, and a living room focal point (before the advent of television), fireplaces were among the most practical--and visually striking--features of bungalow interiors.
